Ex Machina

(2023)

Ex Machina was an installation and a dance performance exhibited in Kuva/Tila Gallery space in Helsinki in February 2023. The Installation consisted of 5 laser engravings on papers and a multi-channel sound in a dimly lit gallery room. The engravings were placed on top of light panels. The Light from the panels was shining more intensely through the engraved part of the papers making them have a golden glow. The engraved prints are called speculative notations and beside being independent artworks, their purpose was to work as notation material to guide dance and sound for a performance.

Ex Machina is a dialogue between human and algorithmic authorship and interpretation. The work presents the interpretative possibilities of speculative notations through movement and sound. In the work created for the Kuva/Tila exhibition space, the speculative notations created by artificial intelligence are shaped into an installation and performance through research, translation and imagination. The nature of synthetic and organic, mechanical and human is sought to be understood and structured in new ways.
